B.Pharm 5th Semester
Industrial Pharmacy–I
Pharmacology–II
Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry–II
Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence
Let’s look at each of the major theory subjects you will study in the 5th semester:
1️⃣ Medicinal Chemistry–II
This subject continues from Medicinal Chemistry–I, introducing students to more advanced medicinal agents, their structures, synthesis, mechanism of action, structure-activity relationships (SAR), and uses. You will study drugs acting on the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and other therapeutic categories. This subject builds your ability to design and understand drug molecules with a clinical focus.
2️⃣ Pharmacology–II
Pharmacology–II covers the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of drugs acting on the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, endocrine system, and autacoids. You will also learn about chemotherapeutic agents. The subject helps you understand how drugs interact with the human body and their mechanisms of therapeutic action, which is essential for rational prescribing and patient counseling.
3️⃣ Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry–II
In this subject, you will study the chemical nature and medicinal uses of various herbal and natural drugs. It explores phytoconstituents, isolation techniques, quality control, and standardization of herbal drugs. The growing demand for herbal medicines makes this subject especially relevant, as pharmacists need to understand plant-based medicine scientifically.
4️⃣ Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence
Every pharmacist must be aware of pharmacy laws, ethics, and regulations. Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence teaches you about the Pharmacy Act, Drugs and Cosmetics Act, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and other rules related to pharmacy practice. This knowledge ensures you follow legal standards in drug manufacturing, distribution, and dispensing.
5️⃣ Industrial Pharmacy–I
This is a flagship subject in the 5th semester, introducing students to industrial aspects of pharmacy. Industrial Pharmacy–I covers:
✅ Preformulation studies
✅ Formulation development
✅ Large-scale manufacturing
✅ Packaging
✅ Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
✅ Quality control and quality assurance
✅ Scale-up of formulations
The subject lays the foundation for working in pharmaceutical industries, where knowledge of equipment, processes, and quality standards is vital. Students learn about tablets, capsules, ointments, and liquid orals in a manufacturing context.
