Partial Fractions
Partial fraction is a method of breaking a rational fraction into simpler fractions. A polynomial is an algebraic expression with variables and constants, while a rational fraction is a ratio of two polynomials. Rational fractions are classified as proper (degree of numerator < denominator) and improper (degree of numerator ≥ denominator). Resolving into partial fractions involves factorizing the denominator and expressing the fraction as a sum of simpler terms. Partial fractions are widely applied in chemical kinetics for integrating rate equations and in pharmacokinetics to solve drug absorption and elimination equations.
Logarithms
Logarithms simplify complex mathematical calculations. If aˣ = b, then logₐ b = x. Important laws include log(ab) = log a + log b and log(a/b) = log a − log b. Common logarithms have base 10 and consist of two parts: characteristic (integer part) and mantissa (decimal part). Logarithms are used in pharmacy for pH calculations, drug stability analysis, and reaction rate studies.
Functions
A real valued function assigns a real value to every real input. Real-valued functions are classified into polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. In pharmacy, functions are used to represent dose–response relationships, drug concentration–time profiles, and pharmacokinetic models.
